Llumí Negre

Llumí Negre is an easy drinking red made from a mix of Grenache and Carignan grapes.

Description

Varieties
Grenache (47%), Carignan (47%) and Hairy Grenache (6%)

Terroir
The Grenache and Hairy Grenache vines are 20 and 25 years old respectively, grown at 400m in the Mas de Cabrera vineyards in Gandesa. The Carignan is from a plot in La Cendrosa at 345m. Soils in both locations are rich in limestone with very little organic matter. All vines are dry farmed with no use of weedkillers or insecticides. After a hot dry summer had delayed ripening, both Grenaches were picked on the 26th of September and the Carignan on the 8th of October.

Production
The grapes were harvested by hand then chilled overnight before destemming and undergoing a 5 day cold-soak. Fermentation was carried out in stainless steel at up to 24°C with regular punch- downs. The individual wines then went in to old barrels for 9 months where they underwent malolactic fermentation. They were then blended and bottled unfined and unfiltered in August 2020.

Analysis
– Alcohol content: 14%
– Total acidity: 5.3 g/l as Tartaric
– Volatile acidity: 0.48 g/l
– Residual sugar: 0.7 g/l

Tasting Notes
The nose has hints of red fruits, plums and forest floor. The palate is again dominated by red fruits with darker overtones combining licorice and spice.

Food Pairing
Works well with all barbecue foods, black pudding, wild boar ravioli, pasta arrabiata, and hearty stews and casseroles of beef or lamb.

Serving Suggestions
The wine is ideally served at 16-18°C, but can also be served slightly chilled. If kept for any length of time, this wine may throw a sediment so decanting may be of benefit.
